EP129 – Tutors United
TUTORS UNITED & THE UK EDUCATION SYSTEM
In this week episode, we are joined by Joel Davis – a multi-award-winning social entrepreneur and the founder of Tutors United; a social enterprise that employs university students and provides affordable private tutoring to primary school pupils from low-income and migrant backgrounds. Joel founded Tutors United at just 17 years old and has since scaled its operations across 4 UK cities, currently employing 65 staff members and supporting 1,000 pupils each year to make academic progress.
In the United Kingdom, schools are either state schools funded by government and are free for all pupils, or they are independent schools and charge fees to the parents of the pupils. Almost all the schools taking part in the HMC Projects Scholarship Scheme are independent schools. In the United Kingdom independent schools have an excellent reputation for high standards of teaching and learning and almost all pupils go on to prestigious universities when they leave.
